The strength in mining relies on a foundation of steel

February 7, 2022

Prospecting and mining can look to durable pre-engineered steel buildings to enhance their operations.

The abundance of natural resources has long played an important role in Canada’s economy. Mining, forestry, fishing and agriculture continue to play a crucial part in our growing modern economy. Mining, in particular, is a tough industry full of skilled, hard-working engineers and tradespeople. Hundreds of thousands of Canadians from across the country have used their knowledge, skills and entrepreneurship to build an industry that is among the world’s largest producers of minerals and metals. At some point, all this activity and labour requires additional facilities construction to support it.

In 2016, some 200 mines and 7,000 quarries produced more than 60 minerals and metals worth $41 billion. A world leader, Canada is the largest producer of potash, second in uranium and niobium, third in nickel, cobalt, aluminum and platinum group metals, and fifth in gold and diamonds. Mining activity helps Canada continue to play its pivotal role in supplying minerals and metals that power a cleaner global economy.

Steel buildings are a significant contributor to successful mining and prospecting operations

With over 40 years of combined business leadership working with the mining industry, Summit Steel Building’s executive team offers manufacturing and construction for complete mining turnkey projects, regardless of how complex. The company has built housing, processing and storage facilities for companies involved in metals and minerals extraction, on transformation and hydroelectric power development sites, as well as for the oil sector. Working in remote locations, including interior B.C. and Canada’s arctic regions, Summit Steel Building’s construction teams are dependable and tough – it’s not just the pre-engineered steel buildings that are able to withstand nature’s harshest conditions.

Whether you’re mining for potash in Saskatchewan, metallurgical coal, aluminum, copper or gold in British Columbia, nickel and mineral ores in Sudbury or diamonds in the arctic, you’re going to need operational and support facilities to keep your crew busy. Fortunately, this is where a building partner like Summit Steel Buildings is able to help. Our innovative mining facility construction services enable us to eliminate unnecessary costs by aligning our effort with clients at an operational level – creating measurable efficiencies throughout the building and installation process.

Providing value and safety throughout the building’s lifetime

Buildings made from steel can be fabricated and assembled off-site to be erected quickly at the location site, resulting in safer working conditions, a shorter construction schedule (up to 60% less) and reduced emissions from on-site construction equipment. Additionally, these facilities use less energy. Less building volume (due to lower floor-to-floor heights) and larger windows (allowed by steel framing) create more efficient climate control and allow more natural light and higher occupant comfort. Steel means buildings can have long-span beams with open, column-free spaces, a tremendous advantage should the building require future expansion.

At the end of the structure’s life cycle, the beams, columns and other steel elements can easily be refabricated for use in other structures through melting and rolling. And other random steel elements captured as scrap will be used to create new products.

Our buildings teams have developed turnkey solutions designed to serve the domestic mining, quarrying and extraction industry through unique organization and planning strategies adapted to working on remote sites across Canada. We have the resources to build complete mill, warehousing and accommodation facilities. Our experience working in the tough environmental conditions of the mining sector enable us to mitigate risks for clients. Our comprehensive safety and communication guidelines are used across the organization on every job to create a culture of safety at all levels of operations.

Mining your budget for the smart construction resource

Based on Canada’s long history of successfully extracting the vast riches that lie underground, natural resources will continue to be a significant contributor to the world’s economy. And, as long as this prospecting and processing of mineral ores and other mined materials continues, operations will be required to outfit their operations with the ideal building structures to support their activities. Prospecting and mining companies need to build effectively and get a good return on the funds they spend. Invest in the most reliable, versatile and technically advanced mining, processing and warehouse construction in Canada and the United States.
